The Story Behind This Painting:

In this painting, Charles Darwin discovers a new species of flamingo. While he sketches it, other flamingos cause chaos—freeing his butterflies, scattering his papers, and stealing his hat and glasses.

The piece references Darwin’s On the Origin of Species, as well as evolution and the beauty of nature’s variety. The final line of Darwin’s book is written in his notebook: “Endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been and are being evolved.”

Leah often explores surreal combinations involving animals—like feather cats, shell birds or lace fish—so Darwin, who helped us understand the evolution of species, felt like the perfect main character for this painting.

For this painting, there are several editions of signed and numbered archival giclee prints on Canvas and on German Cotton Hanamuhle 308 GSM Photo Rag Paper. Email to inquire if you would like to purchase a print that isn't listed on the website.
